Unit 1&2 Evaluation
From the early stages of progressing within units 1&2 for this course in Creative Enterprise, it was clear an open mind and adaptability was key. Covering a wide variety of skills, mostly inexperienced in my previous education, I found this an exciting opportunity to challenge many transferable skills when working as a team, thinking creatively and taking on new demands within the modern creative industry. With a strong background in business related topics, I was fully prepared to translate this experience into an all-new environment.
In the beginning, it was all about finding a palette for taste on our preferences within the creative industries. By producing a successful 5-minute film with a class full of students, all of which I had only met for a few days, who displayed clear differentiation in skills, character and drive to succeed within this course. This helped us establish which roles we enjoyed and were most effective at, which became evidently helpful later in the course. Not only did this help me find my confidence in these roles, this also built an essential relationship with the rest of the course to help with our tasks in the next academic year ahead of us. In this example, I learnt about the equipment such as cameras and TasCams and how to use them, an introduction to editing software such as Premier Pro and replenish old memories from my ‘acting’ skills.
After a series of useful induction skills such as understanding the importance of a creative CV incorporated with a friendly headshot and building a professional portfolio, we were asked to research, review and compare a selection of creative enterprises we would be interested in following suit when coming up with the idea of building our own firms. With a huge interest in music videos, particularly within the hip-hop genre, I decided to make a solution to the problems I see when looking at the current climate of the music industry. Actively understanding how businesses run in the real world, rather than generically in the textbooks, gave a fascinating insight into how I can inherit these corporate structures into my own. This thoroughly widened my perspective on how I should consider building Tuley MVP as a business successfully and competitively in comparison to my researched firms. This gave me a sense of
By researching the A-Z on how my business will be sustainable with regards to chances of survival, this gave a genuine and realistic insight into how I may run a creative business in future. This clearly gave a signature between Level 3 and Level 4 courses, where in Level 3 you may learn about this context in the books, Level 4 ensures your knowledge is applied in the real world. For example, learning all about legal frameworks and legislation such as Ofcom, public insurance liability and press releases is all very relevant when introducing a new business into the market. This industry experience gives me confidence in future decisions.
Networking was a huge part of the course and a skill I absolutely needed to build my confidence in. Nowadays, it’s all about who you know not what you know. Therefore, I took this course as a great opportunity to succeed in this skill. First of all, Norwich Community Sports Foundation posted an opportunity for work experience to build their social media presence. On the very day the job was posted, I got in contact with Head of Course Mark Vaudin where we were introduced to his needs to build stronger relations with stakeholders outside of the college. As a result, myself and the team posted pre and post match interviews, match highlights and even a documentary to be used as advertisement for future years who are looking to join the course. This introduced me to a whole new world of media I have yet to experienced, the perfect time to get out of my comfort zone. As a result, I was able to direct content for the first time, birthing a talent I’d love to progress. Furthermore, we were tasked to get in contact with established businesses similar to our own concepts. After hustling for contacts and sending my work including my business plan and marketing ideas, I got a fantastic response from Eye Film who gave detailed feedback on my work. As a result, I made some specific and detailed changes to my work to become a more realistic concept.
Studying this course gave a genuine insight into the industry and has enabled my transferable skills to devour in the real world not just the textbooks. I have been introduced into a world of media progress I would never have taken on board such as directing and editing which I would love to progress. My experiences, skills and knowledge has been enhanced successfully and I can’t wait to see how this course will progress my confidence in the creative industries further.
