Task 9: Cultural policy
•What is the DCMS and what do they do?
The DCMS, the government Department for Digital, Culture,
Media and Sport, has a huge effect on the creative industry as most if not all
creative enterprises are governed and supported by the DCMS. The DCMS controls
widely significant sectors of the entire creative industry such as financing,
cultural policy and legislation. Their top 3 priorities, according to their
.GOV website consist of: growing the economy, connecting the UK and encouraging
participation. They have achieved this undoubtedly via building new venues,
funding educational resources and supporting local talent via the school
curriculum.
•What are some of their more recent announcements?
In the current lockdown crisis, DCMS has been utterly
shutdown since their biggest money makers have been unable to open. The huge
majority of businesses and personnel associated with the DCMS have been put out
of work, putting their career on the line and forcing great pressure on the
future of thousands of creative enterprises. One of the more recent (and
iconic) announcements relate to a famous poster with Fatima as the focal point.
On the poster, Fatima is portraited as a ballerina and performer, yet the
caption says “Fatima’s next job could be in cyber. She just doesn’t know it
yet.” This caused unmeasurable outrage as metaphorically, the DCMS has suggested
that people who have dedicated their lives to the creative industries and help
generate billions for the DCMS should consider an alternative career path to
ensure employment improves. “Rethink, reskill and reboot” sprinkles even more
bitter sugar on the announcement.
